A large, heavy sterling silver dagger pendant on a fine silver chain.
The blade is engraved THERE WOULD BE DANGER.
The words come from Thomas Hardy's Tess of the D'Urbervilles. Tess has just returned home. She is seventeen. She turns on her mother and asks why no one told her:
"O mother, my mother!" cried the agonized girl, turning passionately upon her parent as if her poor heart would break. "How could I be expected to know? I was a child when I left this house four months ago. Why didn't you tell me there was danger in men-folk? Why didn't you warn me?"
Nobody did.
At the top, a sunburst in relief above a cross guard. At the centre, an antique yellow sapphire set in a heart. As this in an antique stone, it shows signs of wear that come with its age and add to its history.
The blade tapers to a point. Three small dots mark the lower shaft. Black spinels are the edges of the cross.
Approximately 4–5 inches. Hallmarked at the London Assay Office.
If this piece is out of stock it can be commissioned. Allow six weeks.
