Why the Skull?

People ask me about the skulls more than almost anything else I create.  Ooh, thats a bit dark isnt it?

The curious aspect of the skull is that it has spent centuries conveying entirely different ideas.

Sometimes it served as a warning. Sometimes it was a token of affection. Sometimes it offered a way to remember someone who had died. Sometimes it was a joke about the wealthy and powerful. Sometimes it was simply a way of saying you weren’t interested in behaving yourself.

The skull appears in Renaissance art, religious objects, mourning jewellery, Mexican popular art, punk fashion and contemporary jewellery. The meanings shift, but the fascination remains.

That's what interests me.  It's honesty and intrigue.

So for me, it has become a reminder rather than a symbol of death. Things end. People change. Nothing stays exactly as it is. That need not be frightening.

Sometimes it is the reason to pay more attention to being alive.
